Learning to Speak Italian in Italy

Italy is naturally the best place to learn the Italian language.  If you want to hear native Italians speak the language, there’s no place like the mother country.  When you stay in Italy, you can learn Italian easily.  It’s a good idea to listen to people speak the language. You can sit in a park bench or a nearby café and listen to Italians talking.  You will have an idea on how some words are pronounced when you listen to them carefully. 

It is not practical to study the Italian accent from a book.  You have to hear how the Italian words are spoken and used so that you can have the right pronunciation.  When learning a new language, proper pronunciation is important.  To have a better grasp of intonation patterns, you should concentrate on how the words are pronounced.  Listening to others speak in Italy is the most effective way to master the sounds of individual words. 

Aside from the lessons and techniques that you will learn in language schools, you should also set aside some time to practice speaking Italian by yourself.  You have to apply what you have already learned in language school by listening for the words you already know.   Try to imitate exactly what you hear.  This is a fun exercise to do on your own.  Treat it like a game or a challenge to help you focus on the task at hand.  To concentrate on learning pronunciation, you need to be serious.  This means listening attentively to Italian words being spoken whenever you can. 

If you have a radio or television in the room where you are staying, you can turn it on from time to time just to listen to how the deejays speak and construct the Italian sentences.  Listening to the radio is a great way to pick up sounds of individual Italian words.  Be attentive to the words you already know and try to repeat them when they are spoken.  If you can watch an Italian show with English subtitles, try to look out for words that you have learned too.  Aside from learning pronunciation from native Italians, you might want to try recording yourself reading aloud Italian phrases and words.  This is particularly helpful if you are already in the process of learning the intonation and pronunciation of the commonly used words and phrases.

When in Italy, you can choose to study in one of the language schools in a small town such as Tuscany.  If you want to speak like a native Italian, it is best to go to the countryside to avoid the distraction and buzz of city life.  Compared to learning in a big city like Milan or Rome, learning in the idyllic setting of a small town like Tuscany promises to be a more surreal and charming experience.  The slower pace lifestyle of country folks mean that they usually speak in a more cultured and deliberate manner which will suit novice learners of the Italian language who are still trying to grasp the language.

Learning to speak Italian will come naturally if you are in Italy.  Aside from exposing yourself to the food and culture of Italy, you can also make new Italian friends during your stay.  It is best to learn Italian in the mother country for you to be accustomed to the natural accent.
